If a person is a coward, they will never stand up for themselves. A coward would never go up against anyone who they know will beat them down.

A brave person knows that he can be defeated but will stand up for himself no matter what the cost. This quote is saying that if you are always afraid to do things or afraid to take risks, you will never grow as a person. A person who has courage does not go around fearing everything but instead takes risks, even when it may hurt him or her in the long run.
